Filippo Santoni de Sio

An official picture where I try to look smart. I am less boring when I can move and talk.
Hi, I am Filippo. I was born and raised in Italy and I have lived and worked for many years in The Netherlands. I am a professor of ethics and philosophy of technology at Eindhoven University of Technology, and this website is mainly – but not only – about my activity as an academic philosopher.
I am specialized in the ethics and politics of AI – when is it a good idea to develop and use AI, and how should we (re)design and use technology and AI in particular to make (all) human beings more free, responsible, our society more just and democratic? I write, teach, contribute to policy initiatives and multidisciplinary research projects. I present my work in public lectures, keynote talks, and public debates. My last monograph is titled Human Freedom in the age of AI, my last collective effort is the Research Handbook on Meaningful Human Control of Artificial Intelligence Systems. I wanted to be a professional football player or a famous singer-songwriter, I ended up with a good academic job a life full of love and other beautiful things. So it goes, I do not complain at all.
This is the short version of my story, here is my publication page, and here below are two videos – one in English and one in Italian – where I present and discuss some of my work in AI ethics, which you can also watch at enhanced speed if you are really in a rush. If you do feel like reading more about me and my work, here is the longer story. Below the videos some blog posts about my latest activities. Cheers!
